PM Shehbaz Vows Further Reduction in Power Tariffs

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has assured that electricity tariffs will be further reduced for both domestic consumers and industries as part of ongoing reforms in the power sector.

Chairing a review meeting on the energy sector, the prime minister expressed satisfaction over the progress of power sector reforms, stating that they are yielding positive results. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring affordable and environmentally friendly electricity for the masses.

Key Measures & Progress
Renegotiation with IPPs: Revising agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) has contributed to the national economy and lowered electricity costs.
Crackdown on Power Theft: The anti-theft drive will be further intensified to eliminate distribution company losses.
Private Sector Involvement: The appointment of well-reputed private sector board members in power distribution companies has improved their performance.
Reduced Transmission Losses: Efforts to curb transmission losses are showing positive results.
Improved Recovery Rates: The recovery rate of distribution companies reached 93.26% by December 2023, demonstrating the success of the reforms.
Major Transmission Projects: Progress was reviewed on 500 kV Matiari-Moro-Rahim Yar Khan and Ghazi Barotha-Faisalabad transmission line projects.
The meeting was also briefed on the dissolution of the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) and the establishment of the Energy Infrastructure, Development, and Management Company (EIDMC).

PM Shehbaz directed authorities to complete all reforms and infrastructure projects within the stipulated timeframe.
